Blood pressure is commonly measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and consists of two important components: systolic and diastolic pressure. The systolic pressure, which is the first number, indicates the force exerted when the heart contracts. The diastolic pressure, the second number, reflects the force when the heart relaxes between beats. Generally, a normal blood pressure reading is considered to be below 120/80 mmHg.
